BMI tells you whether your weight is proportional to your height, but it says nothing about what that weight is made of. Two people at the same height and weight can look completely different if one carries more muscle and less fat. Body fat percentage cuts through that ambiguity and gives you a clearer picture of your actual body composition.
From a health perspective, excess body fat — especially visceral fat stored around the organs — is linked to higher risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. A normal BMI does not guarantee low visceral fat. Tracking body fat percentage alongside waist circumference gives you a far more useful view of where you stand.
For anyone focused on changing how they look and feel, body fat percentage is also the better progress metric. During a well-designed fat loss program you may gain muscle while losing fat, which means the scale barely moves even though your body is changing significantly. Periodic body fat estimates help you see that progress when the scale cannot.
