Intuitive Eating
Intuitive eating is an approach where eating is guided by the body's internal hunger and satiety signals rather than diet rules.
Intuitive eating is based on the idea that the body knows best when and how much food it needs. The method rejects strict diet rules and calorie counting, focusing instead on listening to the body's signals.
The core principles of the method are: honoring hunger, recognizing fullness, giving permission for all foods, letting go of guilt, and enjoying eating. In practice, this means learning to distinguish physical hunger from emotional hunger.
Leptin and ghrelin are the key hunger hormones whose signals intuitive eating aims to follow. Long-term dieting and strict restrictions can blur these natural signals, so relearning them takes time.
Studies show that intuitive eating is associated with better body image, less binge eating, and more stable weight. However, it doesn't automatically lead to weight loss - the intention is to find the body's natural balance weight.
Intuitive eating is especially suitable for individuals who have a history of repeated dieting or a problematic relationship with food. It's a long-term process, not a quick fix.
